Since the establishment of the regional laboratory training, activities were included in its operational and strategic plan as one of the activities undertaken by capacity-building processes, and annually the number of health workers participating in the in-service training is increasing. After being recognized as the accredited In-service Training Center since June 2010 EC in the country, the regional laboratory training center has been working hard to improve the quality of in-service trainings in the organization and is planning to be the model Continuing Professional Development (CPD) center. While cascading the training, the numbers of health professionals who studied Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Doctors, Health Officers, Nurses of all types, Pharmacy, Biomedical Engineers, Environmental Health, Anesthesia, and Midwifery participated in the training, and different categories of trainings were delivered using interactive lectures, group discussions, role play, and clinical practice modalities as narrated in the CPD guidelines and directives and approved training courses.
Experts of Salale University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (SLU University), Oromia Regional Health Bureau, Ministry of Health, and university lecturers were invited through the training pool and facilitated the training, giving us experience in acting as a competitive Continuing Professional Development Center. The participants of the training were selected based on need assessment, identified gaps during supervision and mentoring, and program initiatives.
The training center has one dedicated hall for presentations that has forty seats and can accommodate thirty to thirty-five targeted participants at a time, along with one demonstration room equipped with a multi-channel microscope and individual practicing microscopes. Additionally, accredited laboratories are used for GeneXpert, AFB, Routine Bacterial Culture, Hematology, and Chemistry trainings. Wi-Fi and broadband internet services are also available in our CPD Center.
The CPD center now assesses training needs, identifies performance gaps, develops training courses, pre-plans and executes training events on approved CPD courses, and monitors and evaluates CPD programs. In general, gradual improvements have been observed over time in the scope of professional cadres engaged in CPD activities and in the number of approved training titles facilitated.
Integrated Human Resource Management Information System (IHRIS) is used for CPD course registration, CPD activity tracking, and trainee and trainer registration and certification.
